Did you know that beton is a form of concrete? It is the German word for a certain concrete, which has French origins. That may be why this 19th-century inspired slab serif also has modern connotations. Or maybe not.
Beton was designed by Heinrich Jost for the Bauer Type Foundry in 1929. Most of its weights and styles were released by 1931. Slab serifs like this, including Girder, Memphis and Stymie, were also considered Egyptian, yet were designed in samples from the 1920s (like those below) to evoke a modern aesthetic and industrial sensibility.
